Sunrise, dawn and the morning light
Sunrise is the instant the sun's upper edge first appears over the horizon. Because the atmosphere bends light, the sun is actually still about half a degree below the geometric horizon at the moment we call sunrise — which is why TimerKit computes the crossing at −0.833°, the same standard used by observatories and almanacs.
The light doesn't switch on all at once. Long before sunrise, three stages of dawn twilight brighten the sky: astronomical dawn (the first faint glow while the sun is 18° down), nautical dawn (the horizon becomes visible at sea, at 12°), and civil dawn (at 6°, when you can read outdoors and the morning blue hour begins). After the sun clears the horizon, the golden hour delivers the soft, warm, low-angle light that photographers and filmmakers prize.
Why sunrise time changes through the year
Your sunrise time shifts with the seasons and with where you are on Earth. Move toward the poles and the swing between summer and winter sunrise grows dramatic; near the equator it barely changes. The date matters too — around the solstices the day length changes slowly, while near the equinoxes sunrise marches noticeably earlier or later each day. How is sunrise time calculated?
Sunrise is the moment the top edge of the sun crosses the horizon, which happens when the sun's centre is about 0.833° below the true horizon — accounting for atmospheric refraction and the sun's radius. TimerKit uses the standard NOAA / Meeus solar position equations to compute this from your coordinates and date.
What is the golden hour after sunrise?
The morning golden hour is the period just after sunrise when the sun is low (up to about 6° above the horizon) and light is soft, warm and directional — ideal for photography. Before sunrise, the blue hour offers cool, even light while the sun is 4–6° below the horizon.
Do I need to share my location?
